Custom Granite Services in Irmo, SC

Irmo grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, and most kitchens here still stand on the original cabinets. Granite went on top of them during the remodel wave around 2005 to 2015. Those old sink bases were never sized for today’s fixtures, so Carolina Custom Granite cuts and reshapes the stone in place instead.

Custom Granite Services for Irmo and Dutch Fork Kitchens

Irmo features a mix of established neighborhoods and newer communities, and each requires a different approach. In Friarsgate, Carolina Custom Granite provides custom granite services that include precise granite cutting around narrow 1970s sink bases and compact patio home kitchens. In Harbison, we frequently enlarge openings in existing countertops installed on original 1980s cabinet boxes to support modern granite installation projects and fixture upgrades.
Around Ascot and Murraywood, we reshape peninsula bars and modify existing stone to match today’s kitchen layouts. Along the Lake Murray Boulevard corridor and toward Ballentine, many newer homes require granite cutting for updated sinks, cooktops, and other fixture replacements. Near St. Andrews and Seven Oaks, much of our work is completed before homes are listed for sale to help kitchens appeal to buyers. We do not sell or install new countertops. Our custom granite services focus on granite installation, cutting, repairs, and modifications to the granite already in place.

Why Do Irmo Countertops Need Extra Support Before Cutting?

Irmo sits in the middle of the Midlands housing timeline. It is not pre war like inner Columbia, and not new construction like much of Lexington. Homes here were framed between roughly 1974 and 1998, when kitchens were built for laminate. The cabinet boxes are often particleboard with thin stretchers across the top, and many were never reinforced when granite arrived twenty years later. That stone has been resting on undersized support for years. Once you cut into it, the load path changes, so bracing has to go in first. Sink bases from that era are also narrower than the ones sold today. Widening an opening in a 33 inch base takes a different plan than widening one in a modern 36 inch base.

Services We Are Offering in Irmo

In House Countertop Cutting

Your granite stays on the cabinets and we cut it there. In Irmo that usually means enlarging an old sink opening, reworking a cutout for a wider cooktop, or trimming a raised bar section flush. We add support under the stone before the blade starts, then finish and polish the new edge on site.

On Site Undermount Sink Repair

Older cabinet boxes flex, and that movement works the sink loose over time. Clips pull out of soft particleboard and the bowl starts to drop. We rebuild the support with proper bracing, reset the epoxy and bring the sink back level. The countertop is never lifted or replaced.

How Old Is The Average Irmo Kitchen, And Why Does It Matter?

Irmo was chartered in 1890, and the name comes from the surnames of two railroad officials. It stayed small for decades, then expanded quickly as the Columbia suburbs pushed west toward Lake Murray. Harbison was launched as a federally backed planned community in the 1970s, and Friarsgate grew into one of the largest subdivisions in the Midlands over the same period. Columbiana Centre opened in 1990 and locked in the Harbison Boulevard corridor.
The town itself counts just under 12,000 residents in the 2020 Census, but the greater Irmo area covered by the 29063 and 29212 zip codes runs well past 40,000 people. Almost all of that housing predates 2000. That single fact drives our work here, because a kitchen built for laminate and later topped with granite is the most common repair candidate we see. Irmo straddles the Lexington and Richland county line, so plumbing and electrical permits route to two different county offices depending on which side of the line the house sits on.

What Is Actually Holding Up Your Irmo Countertop?

The answer changes by build era, and it decides how we approach the cut. Below is what we typically find when we look inside the cabinet. Every home gets checked before a price is given.
Cabinet Era What Sits Under the Granite Support Risk When Cutting What We Do First Where This Shows Up
1974 to 1982 Particleboard box, thin top stretchers High, stone spans too far Add cross bracing and a support rail Friarsgate, Older Ascot
1978 to 1988 Original laminate deck left in place Medium, deck hides soft spots Probe the deck and firm the base Harbison, Murraywood
1985 to 1995 Plywood subtop added at install Low to medium Check fasteners and level the plane Ascot, St Andrews
1990 to 1998 Solid box with narrow sink base Medium at the opening Reframe the sink base opening Seven Oaks, Older Lake Roads
1998 to 2010 Modern box, direct set stone Low Confirm span and clamp the edges Lake Murray Boulevard, Ballentine

Felix was so knowledgeable and knew what needed to be done to get our new stove to fit within the countertop. He coordinated with the installer and cut the countertop after our old stove was removed so the new one one could fit right in. He did great work and was very proficient.

I had an urgent need to get granite counters cut to accommodate a new oven. Felix worked late to get my project done and did an amazing job. Now we can cook for the holidays! Without his willingness to go above and beyond our next installation window was two weeks out. Thank you Felix.

Answers to Your Granite Cutting Questions

Can 1970s Friarsgate cabinets handle an in place cut?
Usually yes, once support is added. We brace across the box and under the cut line before starting, which takes the stress off the old particleboard. If a box is water damaged or crumbling, we tell you that before quoting rather than after.
Does the Harbison community association have to approve this work?
No. Community architectural review here covers exteriors, fences, paint and street facing changes. Interior countertop work falls outside it entirely. You do not need approval to change a sink or a cutout.
We are listing our Dutch Fork home. Is cutting and repair enough for an inspection?
It usually is. Inspectors flag loose sinks, failed seals and standing water under the cabinet, and all three are repairs rather than replacements. Fixing them costs a fraction of a new top and removes the item from the report.
Can you cut down the raised bar on an older Irmo peninsula?
Yes, and it is one of our most requested Irmo jobs. The stone is trimmed flush and the new edge is polished to match the run. The half wall underneath needs a bracket system afterward, which we plan into the same visit.
Can you drill granite for a soap dispenser or a disposal air switch?
Yes. Both are small core drilled holes and take under an hour in most kitchens. The main thing is checking clearance below, since older Irmo sink bases are crowded with plumbing and disposal hardware.
